While reading is an important aspect of learning, listening is also an essential part of learning and development. People often ask me, what’s the difference between hearing and listening?

The answer is simple and it requires your skills.

Hearing is a default function. On the other hand, listening is an art you possess by birth or is acquired through continuous practice. Here there's another glitch, people listen to respond. The moment they listen to the other person they hastily want to reply to them in some way or the other.

Has it happened with you? You listen to someone and immediately want to give a solution, give advise, stop the other person and speak. At times, it is to show the other person that they are wrong or show your macho skills of tackling problems. If you have done it you really need to self analyze if you're a good listener or not. The problem is that the other person does not always demand or needs your answer. Perhaps, they want to be heard or need your attention. They want to share their feelings. They meant to pour their heart out and feel better. They have trust and faith in you, that you won't go and tell it to other people. You should understand that they aren't looking for answers.


So it's time to be an effective listener. You have to hone your listening skills from time to time and generation to generation.


Let’s say,

If your friend is a taciturn person, then show them your qualities of being a sensible and effective listener. Definitely, the sapid conversation will turn into a great gusto.

Below are the variant ways you can practice to develop your listening skills.


1. Watch movies without audio sound. Try to understand what’s happening.

2. If you feel your friend is in need and wants to pour his/her heart to you. Be patient and listen. Don’t listen to respond; listen to understand.

3. Hold on your comments, if people around you are having messy conversations. While you commute from place to place try to be a good listener.

4. You can try to be a sharp observant wherein you only observe and comprehend. Don’t speak.


KEY: Listening can solve your major communication obstacles. Take time to change yourself. Change for a purpose. Listen! Listen! Listen! And when and if needed then you reply or respond.

What is positivity?

Positive thinking is filling up your mind with hope, faith, security, happiness & confidence. Positive thinking is your approach towards the situation. Positive thinking is the energy that you carry with you and within you. The most herculean force in the universe is "the inner force" or "silent force" mentioned by James Allen in one of his books. Rather than a plethora of ambiguity in mind with mixed and multiple thoughts -  "the silent power of thought" is always better.

Positivity around you and within you can change the situation, it can change the thought process, it can evacuate the dull and negative energy around you. It will keep you happy, content, satisfied, blissful, wise and with clutter free mind.


Don’t you run for these things in today’s media dramatic & hectic schedule?


Giving time for yourself is a self-driven thought which can change yourself.


Positivity can be being calm for one person & it can be being content for another. Though the ultimate goal would be the same in terms of giving or expecting results. That's all about positivity and positive thinking.


Why is it necessary?

  • Positivity attitude is necessary for position appraisal at the workplace.

Let’s read a practical example:

Once there were two employees from Sales & Marketing department. They were Raj and Jay. Their company had got a big project recently and these two got selected for Sales & Marketing of apparel product.


At the scenario - They both got landed at a different location. It was a village in a rural area with no such development in the area or living. People in that village weren't wearing proper clothes. Instead, they wrapped themselves with leaves and rags to cover their body.   


Raj - How can I even sell or market my product of apparels here because no one is educated and there is no development. They won't understand the importance of clothing. They all must be having an orthodox mindset. Who will buy? Forget buying they won't even talk to me. My career is finished. I'm going back and working as an Executive.


Jay - Oh! Wow. I can see opportunity lying right in front of me. The entire market is mine. I can spread the importance of apparel and the benefits. I can sell my product to each and every individual. An opportunity to showcase my skills. And if I give my best and achieve something, likewise I might get more rural villages to look after. Also, there are chances of becoming a Marketing Head for a particular location. This is a kick start of my career.


In above you can see how a positive approach changed the situation & created opportunity.

Was it easy for Jay?

No. Not at all. Nothing comes easy in life. They say "Easy earnings are bigger loses"; "Quick & shorter gratifications are temporary. These things can never be for a long term in your life. And remember, to develop any skill you at least need to practice it for minimum 21 days.

Time is money” you must have heard this in your growing years when you were naive. Since then you must have thought of doing a plethora of things would help you. But that's the trance. Multitasking is good at times, however, it may boomerang on several occasions. To learn time management you need to identify what category you fit in from below.

1. Time Waster: Who doesn't like to relax and chill out. But there's a limit to what and how much you waste time. Sleeping for extra hours on a regular basis as your work schedule might accord you to take that extra dose of sleep or may it be binge-watching TV series or movies on a long weekend. Once you are in the set back mode you start becoming a couch potato. Re-think on above and develop yourself to be in a better vision immediately.


2. Yes Sir or the "HANJI" person: Don't you find a person around you at work, college or parties who say "Jee ha mai sab kar lunga" or "Yes I will do it, no issues". Whether it is to get someone from the station last minute or bringing tea for someone, this fellow has world's time to satisfy everyone. Always ready for everything and never says "No”. They might miss their own deadlines but you’ll see them sorting things for others or solving someone else problems. He or She is the problem solver yet the self trapper of his/her own problems. You’ll never see these grow or develop themselves from a career perspective. And if you’re one of them along with emotional quotient for your friends and colleagues, then you really need to buck up & learn to say “No” as soon as possible for your own betterment.


3. The Busy Bee: Whether you work with dedication for hours or no, doesn't matter. What matters is the deadline and quality work with no ambiguity. This person seems to be busy always. Here there is no smart work at all only hard work in on the platter, the reason behind being so busy and occupied. Procrastination has reached a level that you pay bills only on due dates and remembers important things on deadline dates. Last minute work is your go-to formula. These people complete their work but with a heavy heart and stressful lifestyle.


4. The Prioritizer: This person must have learned from his/her ancestors or else must not have that much work as he/she might be an owner of a company, entrepreneur & so on. People often have misconceptions about them. How can they be perfect? What's the difference between them and others. The simple logic is the focus. Firstly they focus on health and manage time for a regular checkup. Because the biggest secret is "Health is wealth". Money can come and go with times but wealth stays with you forever. Planning is their another secret, then whether it is finishing before project deadlines, health check-up, paying bills or following simple to do list. Since they manage everything well, they get ample of time with their family and friends.
